In a condolence message conveyed to his wife, Malkanthie, Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the contribution of veteran Lankan journalist Srimal Abeyewardene, 79, who passed away in Canada recently was ‘noteworthy.’

The president commended Abeyewardene’s “unwavering commitment to journalism and the power of communication in fostering understanding and harmony among multi-ethnic communities. His pivotal role in uniting diverse communities of Sri Lankan origin in a foreign land, is noteworthy.

His contributions to bridging multi-ethnic communities and fostering connections will continue to resonate and inspire,” the president said in a message delivered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“As we mourn the loss of a visionary journalist and passionate advocate for unity in diversity, his legacy is an inspiration to follow. May his soul rest in peace and his family find strength and solace during this difficult time.”
