A lifelong commitment to cricket development in Canada has earned Sri Lankan-Canadian coach and administrator Derek Perera a place in the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame, recognizing a career that has shaped the sport from the grassroots level to the international stage.
Perera was inducted in the builder category during the hall’s 45th annual induction ceremony, an honour that acknowledges not only his achievements as a player and coach, but also his lasting influence on cricket’s growth across Ontario and Canada.
Perera’s family roots trace to Sri Lanka, a nation where cricket occupies a central place in sporting culture. Those connections helped foster a passion for the game that would eventually evolve into a decades-long mission to expand cricket opportunities for young Canadians.
Perera represented Canada at both the junior and senior international levels, competing in tournaments across Europe and Asia and helping raise the profile of Canadian cricket abroad.
Before establishing himself in Canada’s cricket community, he also played club cricket in Sri Lanka, adding an international dimension to his playing career.
His greatest impact, however, has come off the field.
In 2003, Perera founded the Ontario Cricket Academy, an organization that has introduced more than 20,000 students to the sport and helped develop players who later advanced to represent Canada internationally.
As head coach of the Ontario Schools Cricket Association, he has also coached tens of thousands of students and trained more than 1,000 teachers to deliver cricket programs in schools.
City officials said those efforts have played a significant role in increasing cricket participation in Brampton and throughout Ontario, helping transform the sport from a niche activity into one of the province’s fastest-growing games.
