The Sathya Sai School in Toronto has received top billing from the Fraser Institute in their Annual Report Card on Ontario schools released this month. The school located in Scarborough was among the top six schools in the report which ranked 3,030 public and private schools across the province based on standardized exam results. The Sathya Sai School has achieved top scores since students began sitting for the EQAO testing in 2006. Construction is underway to build a multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art school, which will open in September.
Toronto’s Hillmount, Arbor Glen, Seneca Hill, St. Michael’s Choir, Cottingham and Sathya Sai School all achieved perfect scores of 10. An additional 10 schools across the province also achieved perfect scores.
Peter Cowley, the Fraser Institute’s Director of school performance studies, said in a statement on the organization’s website that the rankings are important in helping schools raise their academic standards.
The Sathya Sai School has gained a reputation for integrating high academic achievement with character development based on human values education. The teachers at the school attest to this comprehensive strategy as an indicator for their continued success. “The 40 minutes we spend in the morning [and throughout the day] developing character skills pays back with dividends. It gives students skills to quickly and peacefully solve the inevitable conflict that will arise in the classroom. Less time is spent on dealing with behaviour problems which leaves more time for working on curriculum,” remarked last year’s Grade 3 teacher Mr. Peter Petrevski.

Furthermore, “the class size which is capped at 20 students plays a crucial role in allowing the teacher to connect with each student, thus allowing the opportunity to bring out the talent and potential that is latent in each child,” commented Mr. Parthi Kandavel, the school’s Grade 6 teacher last year.
The Sathya Sai School strives to provide an environment where students can develop in an atmosphere permeated by love and values, where noble ideals and virtues flourish and where Human Excellence is nurtured and encouraged. The students’ top performance year after year is a testament to the efficacy of blending academic studies with character education.
This private secular community School has taken up an enormous project at a cost of millions of dollars for Character Development through the united love of volunteers of the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Organization in Canada and concerned citizens who look to values education as a means of transforming humanity and bringing peace.
The building will comprise state-of-the-art classrooms, including specialized science and arts facilities. The school’s vision is to be a model school for values education in Canada and nurture Human Excellence in its students. The new premises will also enable the Canadian Institute of Sathya Sai Education (CISEE) to train mainstream teachers from across the country in the philosophy and methodology of Educare – a secular concept of “education with care and love” in which the parents and teachers play an equal role for the development of the child.
