Prime Minister Justin Trudeau celebrated Thai Pongal and Tamil Heritage Month at Bill Hogarth Secondary School in Markham.
Trudeau was joined by new President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Digital Government Jane Philpott who is the MP for Markham-Stouffville, and Gary Anandasangaree MP for Scarborough-Rouge Park, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism.
Earlier, the Prime Minister released a statement to mark the occasion of Thai Pongal.
“This week, the Tamil community in Canada and around the world will celebrate Thai Pongal, the four-day harvest festival.
“Thai Pongal is a time of celebration, joy, and community. Families and friends will gather to give thanks for a plentiful harvest, and to cook and share Pongal, a sweet rice pudding,” Trudeau said.
“As we mark the end of the harvest season and the start of the New Year, we also celebrate Tamil Heritage Month. During this special time, we recognize the many contributions Tamil Canadians have made to the success and prosperity of our country.
“On behalf of our family, Sophie and I wish everyone celebrating Thai Pongal a joyful festival,” he added.
