Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Stephanie Dion says the next four years will be crucial for Sri Lanka in its path for reconciliation and prosperity.

“Help us make this link strong in the next four years, to continue on the momentum we see in Sri Lanka. It is still fragile, reversible,” Dion said in a speech at the Canadian Tamil Congress Thai Pongal Gala.

Dion spoke to his Sri Lankan counterpart last November ahead of meeting between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Maithripala Sirisena in Malta.

Yet strong community ties between the two countries could make the main difference, he said.

“Canada has an asset, it is the Tamil community. That is a great asset for our country,” Dion said.

“I am sure you will do your best to help the Tamil community and all Sri Lankans in Sri Lanka.”
