Diplomats scramble over Sitsabaiesan’s visit to Sri Lanka

Canadian media was buzzing with news late yesterday and today over NDP MP Rathika Sitsabaiesan condition in Sri Lanka and the flashpoint will likely add more pressure to an already cool relationship between the two countries.
Reports yesterday coming out of online news sources suggested “Terrorist Investigation Department” confined New Democrat MP Rathika Sitsabaiesan to her hotel in Jaffna, the capital of Sri Lanka’s Northern Province, preventing her from meeting anyone.
However, today Canada’s High Commissioner in Sri Lanka confirmed Sitsabaiesan was not under house arrest, according to QMI.
Sitsabaiesan is the first person of Sri Lankan orgin to be elected to Canadian parliament, she has been critical of the Sri Lankan government.

The situation will likely add more pressure to Canada’s relationship with Sri Lanka, which cooled during the CHOGM summit last November in Colombo when Prime Minister Stephen Harper boycotted the meeting citing the island nation’s rights record.
