Councillor Kanapathi seeks re-election in Markham

Councillor Logan Kanapathi, in the town of Markham, Ontario Ward 7 incumbent, submitted his candidacy recently to seek re-election to serve the residents of his ward.

 His nomination form was submitted on Tamil Thai Pongal day.

In 2006, Logan Kanapathi was the first person of Sri Lankan origin to hold public office in Canada.

Councillor Kanapathi made headlines in November 2006, when he first won his seat, becoming the first Canadian Tamil to be elected to political office.  As quoted by Toronto Star, he is “a new face for a new era.”

Ward 7 residents are well aware of his advocacy for and the pivotol role he played for two years in a row in achieving a 0% tax increase in 2009 and 2010.

 Since being elected, Councillor Kanapathi has been a strong advocate for open spaces for families and children.  He opened a new park in 2009 while another one with a state of the art cricket field is opening this spring.  Residents can expect three more parks for 2010 and 2011.

In addition, Councillor Kanapathi is working tirelessly on having a new community centre completed in the near future, which will contain a seniors facility.  The community centre will help to provide local recreational facilities that Ward 7’s growing population requires.  However, as the number of residents in Ward 7 increases, Councillor Kanapathi will continue to fight for greater equitable and accessible use of publicly funded community centres.

 He was a member of the second suite committee studying the legalization of basement apartments.

 He is a tireless advocate and very passionate against crime and gang-violence.  He progresses in forming a Neighbourhood Watch in Ward 7.

 For the past three years, Logan Kanapathi has been making Ward 7 a greener community.

 He is a firm supporter of environmental initiatives at Markham Town Council and LEED building projects.
