Community facilitates Sri Lanka’s Junior Badminton team in Toronto

Members of the community facilitated young badminton players from Sri Lanka on their visit to Toronto.

Members of the Sri Lankan community in Toronto rallied on short notice to bring smiles to the faces of Sri Lanka Junior Badminton players who were participating in the Li NING BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championships.
The team excelled in the tournament and finished 16th out of 40 teams during a two-week tour. The team placed 37th last time they participated in the tournament.

Members of the local Sri Lankan community in Toronto organized an exhibition game and dinner to facilitate the junior players with gifts. ActionZone sports facility in Scarborough, graciously offered their premises support the event.
Meanwhile, members the community organized a trip to Niagara Falls for the visiting junior players, with a well-wisher offering a bus for the team to travel.

While in Toronto, the team also met with ULM Jahur, Consul General of Sri Lanka.
According to the President of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association Nishantha Jayasinghe this time junior shuttlers came up with a superb performance to get more exposure. We selected the 13 junior players based on their performances and they finished in 16th place at the team event. Actually, that was mixed team event which comprised boys and girls singles, doubles and mixed doubles event.

Sri Lanka Badminton team which took part in the World Junior Badminton Championships Dumindu Abeywickrama, Chirath Illeperumarachchi, Chamth Dias, Sewmina Gunatilleka, Gavin Morogoda, Nadun Punchihewa, Dilmi Dias, Jananuwani Amanda, Hasini Ambalangodage, Anurangi Masakorala, Tanushi Ratnayaka, Vishmi Edirisinghe, Manuki Chandrasekara, Chameera Kumarapperuma (coach) Sampath Weragoda (Manager), Sujeewa de Silva (Lady Cheperon).
