Cricket Canada received a massive boost this week after Canadian Foreign Minister signed an agreement with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the richest and most influential board in the sport.

Cricket Canada was dealt a major blow when they lost ODI status this year following a run of poor performances, which resulted in a failure to qualify for the 2015 World Cup, a tournament that Canada has consecutively played in for the past three editions.

Foreign Minister Baird signed the an agreement that would see exhibition matches played between Canadian and Indian cricketers as early next January.

“Canada and India already share a vibrant relationship,” said Baird. “Collaboration in sports offers another wonderful opportunity for both our countries to celebrate our friendship. With this in mind, BCCI partners and I have announced our intention to organize exhibition cricket matches between Indian and Canadian players in Canada next year.”
