Longtime Sri Lankan diplomat U.L.M. Jauhar has formally assumed his role as the new high commissioner to Canada after presenting his credentials to Governor General Mary Simon.
Jauhar was among seven new diplomats who met with Simon at her official residence, Rideau Hall, in Ottawa. The group included heads of mission from Cameroon, Türkiye, Germany, Denmark and Bangladesh.
Governor General emphasizes diplomacy and storytelling
In her address, Simon emphasized the importance of diplomacy and sharing stories to foster understanding.
“Today’s ceremony is a reminder of the importance of strong diplomatic ties. It reaffirms our commitment to working together to address our most pressing global issues,” Simon said.
Drawing from her own experience as a former diplomat, Simon added, “Whenever I shared stories of real-life experiences in Nunavik, in northern Canada, and the challenges my community was facing, doors would open.”
Jauhar’s diplomatic background
Jauhar, Sri Lanka’s top diplomat in Canada, most recently served as the additional foreign secretary in Colombo. He is no stranger to Canada, having previously served as Sri Lanka’s consul general in Toronto six years ago.
Call for international cooperation
Simon highlighted the need for international cooperation on climate change and human rights.
“More than ever, we must continue working together across borders to support strong global climate action,” she stated, adding, “We must continue defending human rights and fighting all forms of discrimination together.”
Welcoming New Diplomats to Canada
The governor general concluded her speech by welcoming the new diplomats and their families to Canada, encouraging them to engage with Canadians.
“Share your stories and listen to Canadians. You will learn so much about our country through theirs,” Simon said.
Upon their arrival in Canada, new heads of mission must present their letters of credence to the governor general before they can carry out their duties. Letters of credence are the official documents that accredit a diplomat as an ambassador or high commissioner to another country.
