ROCOBA (ONT) is well known for their flagship event, The Royal College New Year’s Eve Dance held every year. However, in an effort to draw out the reluctant and the newer Royalists who have arrived here, President Dilkaran Rajendra had dreamed up the idea of a “Royal Rumble’, a lesser version of the annual event.

Aided aptly by his capable committee, the dream was born. A low cost, simple, casual and fun event held to meet, greet, and mingle while dancing the night away during the summer.

To say it was a success would be an understatement. An enthusiastic crowd danced to the music of DJ Rekha and this year, featured a novel idea for novice performers to sing and showcase their talents as well. It was well received and garnered many positive comments.

It would be hard pressed to find anyone in Sri Lanka today who has not heard of “Trail 2016 (https://trailsl.com/ ) – raising funds to build a paediatric cancer hospital in Karapitiya, near Galle, Sri Lanka, President Dilakran in his address also drew attention to this worthy cause and pledged a part of the funds for this project as well as a scholarship fund for less privileged student who would not normally have the opportunity to attend Royal College.

The guest dined on a buffet of sumptuous Biriyani and the usual items, but another idea by Dilkaran was to feature hot, hot hoppers made on the spot by a team of cooks. The line up was a testament to its success. Later on at midnight, sweet table was laid with individual cheesecake, and Sri Lankan delicacies like kavun, and kokis etc.

There was a raffle draw with many worthy prizes and gifts, some donated by old boys of the school.

The evening ended with a vote of thanks to the guests who attended and made the night a success. (By Dayan De Silva)
