Toronto Mayor John Tory signs partnership agreement with Jaffna

In a whirlwind two-day visit to Sri Lanka, Toronto Mayor Tory visited Killinochchi, Mullaitivu, Jaffna and Colombo. The Mayor was joined by the Chief Minister of the Northern Province C.V. Wigneswaran, Economic Development Committee Chair and Toronto City Councillor Michael Thompson and newly elected Toronto City Councillor Neethan Shan.

Mayor Tory signed a cooperation and partnership agreement with the Chief Minister and the Municipal Commissioner to advance a number of areas including good governance, education, public library services and economic development. With a large diaspora in Toronto, this agreement between Toronto and Jaffna symbolizes the friendship between the two cities.

Following the signing of the memorandum of understanding, the Mayor made a symbolic donation of books from the Toronto Public Library to the Jaffna Public Library.

Meanwhile, in Colombo, Tory and his delegation met with Sri Lankan Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, and held a number of meetings with Canadian businesses in Sri Lanka. Tory opened the offices of Ceylon Graphite in Colombo, prior to his departure to Mumbai.
