Pioneer Sri Lankan TV director in Canada passes away

Pioneering Sri Lankan – Canadian television show director  Pathirage (Nimal) Perera has passed away. Mr. Perera and his late wife Malini contributed heavily to the Sri Lankan Canadian community by producing television shows and cultural programs over several decades.

The couple were the first to produce a Sri Lankan television show and movie in Canada.Mrs. Malini Perera passed away after a brief illness in Toronto nearly five years ago. Mr. Perera was the director of  the weekly television show Kala Kavaya which airs on OMNI 2. In 2006, Mr. Perera was honoured by the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada (NEPMCC), receiving an award from the Lt. Governor of Ontario for his years of service.

Their first TV program was known as the “Pearl of the Orient” and movie ‘Ratakin Ratakata’ was great success here in North America. The family also went on to produce cultural dancing events, and several community and youth events.
