Sri Lankan-born Damindra Dias was among 19 persons who received the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award earlier this month in Toronto.
The award established in 1995, “recognizes living Canadians and permanent residents who have made a significant, sustained, unpaid contribution to their community, in Canada or abroad,” according to the Governor General’s office.
“Often working behind the scenes, these individuals volunteer their time and efforts to help their fellow citizens. The award also brings to light the example set by volunteers, whose compassion and engagement are a part of our Canadian character.”
Helping people find ‘meaningful employment’
Ms. Dias, who lives in Woodbridge Ontario, has been a volunteer for over a decade at the Progress Career Planning Institute where she provides career coaching for those seeking meaningful employment.
“She develops presentations and workshops that equip job seekers with the necessary tools to find work in their respective fields. She also helps individuals with résumé development and interview preparation. Damindra’s ability to help others reach their full potential has been appreciated by many,” added her citation.
