Sailan Muslim Foundation of Canada (SMFC) expresses its condolences on the demise of the Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero. Ven. Sobitha Thero was a key civil society figure in the defeat of populist authoritarianism.

A national charismatic icon and a leading figure behind the democratic changes which delivered Sri Lanka from a dictatorial and divisive rule.

Thus, as the nation mourns the sad loss of this charismatic and inspiring leader, it is only right that we commit ourselves to work towards creating a country devoid of racial and religious hatred.

As a respected member of the clergy and of civil society, the Ven. Sobitha Thero was able to articulate the views of a pluralistic and righteous society.

He understood better than most and expressed in no uncertain terms the primary duty of civil society in a functioning democracy – that of constant vigilance and active participation in public affairs for good governance. SMFC salutes a champion of civil rights and social justice who stood by the rights and liberties of everyone and who taught to love all equally & respectfully. He will be sadly missed by all.
