Leading journalists from Canada and Sri Lanka came together on Saturday for a panel discussion to examine press freedom and related human rights issues in Sri Lanka as part of a special event commemorating the life and times of slain Sri Lankan journalist, Lasantha Wickrematunge who was the former editor of Sunday Leader Newspaper.

Panellists for the event included exiled Sri Lankan journalist J.S. Tissainayagam, Sanjana Hattotuwa, Founding Editor, Groundviews, Stewart Bell, Senior Reporter, National Post moderated by Naheed Mustafa.

The event was held at Ryerson University in Toronto organized by Sri Lankans Without Borders (SLWB), South Asian Journalists’ Association (SAJA),.

The memorial lecture was endorsed by a number of national and international journalism and media organizations including PEN Canada, Canadian Journalists for Free Expression, Journalists for Human Rights, and Free Media Movement Sri Lanka.

SLWB in partnership with Groundviews, a civic media initiative of the Centre for Policy Alternatives announced the launch of the De Zoysa-Sivanayagam 2014 Fellowship in Digital Journalism.
